Our first call will be the stunning new Wedgewood Museum at Barlaston Stoke on Trent, winner of the £100,000 Art Fund Prize for Museums and Galleries 2009.

This museum contains not just ceramics but manuscripts, factory equipment and fine art. It is only 3 minutes walk from the Trent and Mersey canal.

Our coach will then take us to our second visit - the Potteries Museum in the city centre which has the world’s largest collection of Staffordshire ceramics and recent acquisitions from the Minton museum. It also houses a collection of costumes, textiles and twentieth century costume dolls as well as a gallery of water colour paintings and drawings.

We could also visit Bethesda chapel across the road and the related exhibition “Building Jerusalem” at the museum.

The museum is only five minutes walk from the city centre.

Cost :- Friends - £15.00. Others £18.00

Entry to the Potteries museum is free.

Entry (group concessions) to the Wedgewood museum:

£3.50 – Museum only

£6.00 – Museum and visitor centre

Entry fee to be collected on the coach

Provisional timings are :- Leave Newtown 8.00 am Welshpool 8.20.

Arrive Wedgewood approx 10.15. Leave Wedgewood 2.00. Arrive Potteries 2.30. Leave 4.30.

There are cafes at both venues.

June 12th 2010 - Picasso: Peace and Freedom at Tate Liverpool
We are planning a trip to The Tate in Liverpool, to see the Picasso exhibition—Picasso: Peace and Freedom. This exhibition is bringing together 150 works by Picasso from around the world. It reveals a less well known Picasso, as a tireless political activist and peace campaigner. The exhibition is the first to explore his post war period and will include letters to him from various prominent figures of the cold war period: Castro, Mandela etc.

Group entrance costs £6, but we are required to pay 2 weeks in advance, so if you would like this concessionary price, we would need your payment by 26^th May. Cost, including entry and coach will be £21 for members and £24 for non members. We do not intend to arrange another visit in Liverpool, so you will have time to explore the city, either the Albert Dock area, or the Walker Gallery or the new gallery at the university or further exhibitions at the Tate, Slavery museum etc

Leaving times to be confirmed. Though there will be pickk up points in Newtown and Welshpool.

Lille
We are still hoping for more interest in the proposed trip to Lille in September, we do need at least 30 interested people to keep costs low. Please contact the gallery as soon as possible for further information.

AGM

Please note the AGM will be held at the Oriel Davies Gallery at 6:00 on Thursday March 18^th. We would be very pleased if you could attend.

The Friends annual quiz is now in it's third year, with questions on art history and general knowledge. The quiz will be held at the gallery on October 16th, starting at 7pm. Book early to avoid disappointment. Price to be confirmed.

You don't have to be a Friend of the Gallery to attend one of our events! Everyone is welcome.

Trips

There have been three trips so far this year – a very successful one to Cardiff and Castell Coch, an equally successful, but slightly less well attended one to Whitick Manor and the Barber Institute and a third trip to Anglesey and Bodelwyddan Castle which we’re very please to say was full!

Please make the most of these trips, numbers have dropped this year and we may not be able to continue with the extent and variation of the trips on offer. Remember – the more that come the bigger, and more comfortable, the bus!

We would very much welcome ideas for trips in 2010, current suggestions include the Picasso exhibition at Tate Liverpool together with the newly opened Victoria Gallery at the University, local National Trust sites housing important art collections and a visit to Ruthin followed by Mostyn Gallery in Llandudno.

Events

Friends events planned for autumn and winter 2009 include the ever popular Quiz Evening on October 16^th, now in it’s third year with the questions not getting any easier, thanks Peter! Cost £3.50 per table plus an optional £5per head for a (delicious) buffet provided by Alice from the gallery cafe. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Our Christmas talk this year will be discussing Fakes and Fogeries on December 11^th, this talk will, as usual, be followed by our Christmas gathering. More information on will follow in the next newsletter.

Oriel Ynys Mon (Anglesey Museum & Art Gallery)
The Oriel Kyffin Williams has on display works by Kyffin Williams.The History Gallery has one section dedicated to the wildlife artist Charles Tunnicliffe.

Bodelwyddan Castle (Denbighshire) is a regional partner of the National Portrait Gallery, and houses many portraits from the19th century collections of the London based National Museum. This historic house & museum also displays collections of furniture from the V&A and sculpture from the Royal Academy. Within the grounds are 1st World War training trenches.

Ruthin Craft Centre has 3 galleries and 6 artist studios and houses various exhibitions.

PLEASE NOTE
All trips are organised by volunteers from the committee of FOD. Although the Gallery is a contact/information point, they will need to pass on any specific queries to the volunteer who is organizing the trip. Every effort is made, where possible to negotiate the cheapest entry price, but it is often not possible to do this as issues such as age, concessions, membership of organizations e.g. The National Trust, cancellations and additions come into play.
